Law Degrees- Does Size Matter?

On the lighter side...

I went to a third tier toilet law school, and my law degree is HUGE. The damn thing is 11 inches x 14 inches. I actually measured it again this morning just to make sure I was correct about the dimensions. I was looking at L4L’s blog the other day, and a poster commented that his Thomas M. Cooley law degree is larger than a Murphy bed. Even if I wanted to get a frame for it (which I don’t really care to do), where would I find a frame big enough to hold my degree?

Would I need to go to a special furniture store? Would I need to buy a humungous picture frame to store my “prestigious” law degree? What about those frames that are designed to hold large posters? Can you whip out your JD and impress your girl just due to its sheer size?

My undergrad degree is standard 8.5 x 11. Why is my JD so large? Could it be to compensate for the caliber of the degree? (I guess this would be the reverse of penis compensation, where a man supposedly buys an expensive sports car or huge truck to compensate for his size.) Drake University is a small private school, and many of its undergrad programs have a solid reputation. The school can afford to be selective in the admissions process. However, the law school is a TTT.

And remember, perception is everything in the law. Most of my law profs went to top ten law schools and many were on law review, held federal clerkships, worked in Biglaw (briefly), etc. They couldn’t handle the stresses and time constraints of Biglaw, and now they are more than happy to make a very comfortable living putting third tier law students several tens of thousands of dollars in debt.

Notice how the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT) has removed its survey info? They understand that pissed off students, who have accumulated six figure debt loads, will catch onto this financial scam, i.e. we go into serious debt and the professors make substantial six-figure salaries. Don't forget the salaries of law school deans and administrators, the added prestige to the larger university, and the massive profits of the student loan cartel. What a great system, huh?

  1. The salary survey information has not been removed from the SALTLAW.org website. The website was completely redesigned and the salary survey information is now located on a different page.
